Vocabulary puzzle based on Chapters 7 - 21 of the novel by Kathryn Stockett. The words used in the puzzle are important words from these chapters - words with which students should be familiar for discussion and analysis of the text.
The 35 words used in the puzzle are.. charity, civil_rights, confession, criticize, editor, evil, fiancée, frustrated, hypocrite, immunity, integration, interview, irony, jerk, library, miscarriage, panic, paranoid, penitentiary, publish, racism, rage, relief, risk, satchel, satchel, secret, segregation, threat, tonic, vindictive, violation, volunteer, and wretched.
This is an active learning activity disguised as a fun task. Students enjoy the activity, while at the same time they are focusing on the words - both meaning and spelling.
To get a second activity out of this resource, you could ask students to write a new sentence for each word which shows its importance in the novel.
This is the type of activity you could use as a filler on a day when you have nothing else prepared, or give to a sub teacher.
A word bank is supplied to support students. You could redact this to make the puzzle more challenging.
The solution is printed on the second page. Download the preview file to see the solution and the grid.
