This is a unit that teaches a simplified outline of the standard path of the archetypal hero suitable for high school. The students learn the standard path of the archetypal hero and apply it to the adventures of Will Stoneman in Disney's film, Iron Will in a comparison essay. The unit begins with the students reading “The Colomber” by Dino Buzzati and recognizing Stephano’s refusal to meet the colomber as a refusal of the hero’s calling.
This unit contains a brief literary analysis of “The Colomber” with questions for either essay writing or class discussion. This unit contains an outline for the comparison essay, extensive notes, and a sample essay as well as notes on how I teach the unit.
