I loved introducing my students to Joseph Campbell's Hero's Journey. They can analyze and dissect stories from modern times and classical tales in a way that connects them all.
There are two Powerpoints (one without examples and one with examples from the story of Perseus), one blank worksheet for students to use to fill out, and one sheet with each of the steps for students' notes.
When I did this lesson, I had students take notes on each step then find another example story that followed the Hero's Journey steps. I ended up showing Star Wars after school one day for students who wanted to stay after and watch and use that for the project (it is a PERFECT fit), but students were able to find many other examples as well. I even used Napoleon Dynamite as an example!
When students start to make connections between stories they know and the stories we read in class, they begin to understand story structure and archetypes in a more tangible way.
