The hero's journey is a popular monomyth and archetypal plot structure. Introduce the 3 major stages and 12 steps of the Hero's Journey before or after teaching a text featuring a hero!
This worksheet contains 3 pages: the first defines a monomyth and details the major stages of the hero's journey. Beneath each major stage are smaller "steps" that advance the plot. Stages and steps are color-coded for visual learners. The next two pages are worksheet templates that allow students to apply reading comprehension skills.
There are two options for in-class worksheets that cater to different organizational styles. The first worksheet offers a graphic organizer chart for students to list plot points from the text they have read or are studying. The second worksheet features a blank analog clock for students to draw or list plot points in a more creative manner. I provide students with both options so they are comfortable recalling information in a way that suits their needs. Working with a partner allows students to check for understanding, but this may certainly be used as an individual formative assessment.
