"The Highwayman" by Alfred Noyes is a high interest narrative poem that students love. As a narrative poem, the structure is familiar to students, making it easier for them to focus on the many poetic devices Noyes uses.
This Common Core aligned lesson plan guides students into not only identifying poetic devices, but also considering why they were used. By looking at the impact of these devices on the meaning of the poem, students will begin to see how they can utilize those same devices in their own writing.
This poetry analysis guide contains 7 pages of teaching hints (including guiding questions and poetic devices examples), extension activity ideas, and student activity worksheet. Mix and match and use what works for you.
