Students read "The Highwayman" by Alfred Noyes, which is a narrative poem about a love triangle that ends tragically. Its themes of unrequited love, forbidden love and sacrificial love are popular with teenagers and can be easily related to Romeo & Juliet. A song version exists on youtube which can be used to aid comprehension. Students have to identify key poetry terms: simile, metaphor, onomatopoeia, hyperbole, alliteration, assonance, personification and later discuss the theme and irony of the story. It could be used as a final poetry quiz or an assignment.
