Students have a difficult time understanding what life was like in different time periods. During social studies, I frequently hear questions like "Were there cars back then?" or "Did they have telephones?" I designed these invention cards to help students orient themselves historically and understand when major inventions came into existence. They are great to use with a classroom timeline that students can reference throughout the year. Some activities that go with these cards include:
--Invention Sort: What kinds of inventions are these?
--Sequencing Activity: How do dates work? Can you place these inventions in order by date?
--Guess the Order: Can you put these inventions in order from earliest to latest?
--Invention-A-Day: Can you guess where on the timeline to place today's invention?
This purchase also includes discussion questions that promote deeper understanding of why technological inventions became important at certain periods of time.
There are probably many other ways you could think of using these cards, from research prompts to other games. Have fun with them!
