I start this lesson by asking the students what a nursery rhyme is. Then make a list of nursery rhymes they know. I then show a quick video clip of a well known nursery rhyme like "Itsy Bitsy Spider". Following that I distribute the graphic organizer. We read through "Baa Baa Black Sheep" together. I model how to take "visual notes" about what it is about. (Visual notes are an illustration). These notes go in the thought bubbles. Students then work with partners to read through the remaining nursery rhymes to take visual notes (illustrations) on what they mean. Next, explain that each of the rhymes has historical background and don't actually mean what they say. Discuss what they think each nursery rhyme REALLY means. Finally display the power point and explain the real significance of the nursery rhyme. Students will take notes on the graphic organizer explaining the real significance.
