In June of 1812, Napoleon began his fatal Russian campaign. The invasion of Russia was an attempt to force Tsar Alexander I to submit once again to the terms of a treaty known as the Continental System.
By the end of 1810, Alexander had stopped complying due to its deleterious effect on Russian trade. Alexander also imposed a heavy tax on French luxury products like lace and rebuffed Napoleon’s attempt to marry one of his sisters.
Having gathered nearly 500,000 soldiers, from France as well as all of the vassal states of Europe, Napoleon entered Russia at the head of the largest army ever seen. The Russian Army numbered around 200,000 men.
Napoleon’s goal was to win a quick victory that forced Alexander to the negotiating table. The Russians, under Marshal Kutuzov, could not hope to defeat him in a direct confrontation. Instead, they begin a defensive campaign of strategic retreat, devastating the land as they fell back while harassing the flanks of the French.
Winter eventually destroyed the French army.
