The History of Thanksgiving: Pumpkin Pie, Abe Lincoln and "Mary Had a Little Lamb"
This anticipation guide is an easy way to activate prior knowledge and ignite curiosity about the history of Thanksgiving. Before reading "The History of Thanksgiving" students are asked to respond to several statements that challenge or support their preconceived ideas about Thanksgiving. Revisit the guide after reading and have students use the columns to the right of each statement to mark whether they now agree or disagree based on what they’ve learned. Encourage students to mark or write down where the text supports their initial reaction to statements, or causes them to rethink those reactions.
Anticipation guides can be used for all types of learners and modified to meet their individual needs.
