How can writing a blog bring character insight?
In this Project, students write blog entries for characters from The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien. This is a useful way to delve more deeply into the motivations of the characters after finishing reading, or even at a mid-way point in the book.
Students work in groups to come up with a series of blog entries stretching across parts of the book, thinking about a particular character's perspective and voice. When students write for an audience outside their own classroom, the quality of their writing, motivation and enjoyment tends to improve.
