Product Description
A fun creative writing project for students! Tolkien draws on the idea of legendary swords in The Hobbit, providing a great jumping off point for a fun project! With the first activity students look closer at the swords in The Hobbit (Thorin's Orcrist, Gandalf's Glamdring, and Bilbo's Sting) and then look at legendary and mythical swords throughout history. From these they gather ideas for their own sword's design and history and begin to brainstorm. I allow my students nearly 100% creative freedom. They can set their story in any country, planet, solar system, universe, dimension, etc. They may also use their favorite book, movie, show, etc. as a jumping off point and write a sort of fan-fiction tale as well. For this, them must be original, but stick to the rules of that world or universe.

My students always love this project every year. It gives them a chance to write something fun while still staying true to curriculum and themes we're studying.
