The Hobbit is sweeping classrooms nationwide due to its emergence as a Common Core exemplar novel and the release of the major motion picture.
One of the most fascinating aspects of the novel for many students is the variety of fantasy races and creatures. From Dwarves to Wargs to the Hobbit species, students are intrigued by these unique races and creatures.
Within this fascination lies an essay topic. Students must research using the novel 3 different races. Students must then write an informational essay detailing the races' physical and character traits. This is a wonderful time to talk about direct and indirect characterization, as well as the differences between direct quotations and paraphrasing.
Provided is the essay prompt, a rubric, and a writing sample for students to model.
