This is an ancient history passage and assessment on the exciting 2003 discovery of Homo floresiensis, the so-called “Hobbit” humans, that was made on the island of Flores in Indonesia. What made this find so unusual was that this previously unknown hominid became extinct quite recently and for a time shared the planet with our Homo sapiens ancestors. The text details the discovery and follow-through studies that have helped us learn more about the characteristics and life of our small human relatives.

The text was written for Grade 5-8 reading levels and can be used in a number of ways by teachers (close reading, direct instruction in class, independent practice, homework, test prep, assessment, centers, etc). Please see the Preview for part of the text and all the assessment questions.

This “printable/no prep” resource includes:

1) An informative and detailed 800-word ancient history passage called “Homo Floresiensis: The Hobbit Man.”

2) A set of 23 questions that include comprehension, analysis, and interpretation of the passage. The questions were written to align with Common Core Standards RI.4.1, RI.4.7, RI.6.1, and RI.6.5

3) An additional crossword puzzle for your early finishers or to use as another form of

assessment.

4) Answers to every question.
