I use this PowerPoint to teach the famous poem "The Hollow Men" by T.S. Eliot.
First, I will have students read the poem a few times (together and on their own) for a general feel and understanding of the poem. Then, they will annotate it. If you have not yet taught your students how to annotate, I have included an annotation guide for you to use. Thoroughly annotating the text before using this PowerPoint really gets students to think through this deep, intricate, and multi-layer poem beforehand!
After thoroughly annotating the text, I will usually facilitate a classroom discussion on the poem and ask students what they think various parts of it mean. I have also done it where we do a Socratic Seminar on the poem so that students are given the chance to share their thoughts on it.
After all of this, I will then use this PowerPoint to lecture on the poem. The PowerPoint includes background information on the poem, an explanation of various symbols, allusions, etc. made in the poem, and analysis of various aspects of it. It has been very successful in helping my students understand this complex poem on a deeper level, and I have had a great response to it. Hope you find it as useful as I have!
