This is a fantastic novel to use with 2nd to 6th graders, from the "can't-put-a-book-down" kids to the not-so-enthusiastic readers. A journal format creates a unique text feature for students to stretch their comprehension skills. The story details a police interview after four students have committed a crime involving homework, cheating, and littering in a National Park. Dan Gutman is an amazing author with many other books that you'll want to use in your classroom, like Jackie and Me.
This novel study is my second novel study on TPT and includes original ways to learn vocabulary, like analogies and King of the Word, as well as traditional ones that correspond to the comprehension pages. Comprehension pages are called "Show What You Know" and the activities vary. Examples include fill-in-the-blank, write a summary in 20 words, and questions that require short answers. Answers are included in the back. You can present the students with a packet (a cover page is included) or give them assignments as you move through the novel. The entire packet, including the answers, is 48 pages. The student packet is 30 pages.
