I introduced this book with a book talk to my middle school readers, and I was shocked by the response. I didn't even get a chance to put the book down before kids were signing it out. It has been signed out of our classroom all year, and it is returned within days with exclamations such as, "That was the best book I ever read!" and "I can't believe that ending!" Want to learn more about Mt. Rainer, the tallest mountain in Washington State, and the only one that is still an active volcano, and they are riveted by Mark's journey up the mountain. Especially when they learn that he has been battling cancer for years, and is going to the top of the mountain to die. I will now be using Dan Gemeinhart's The Honest Truth to teach theme, as it is perfect for the study of theme as well as teaching the skill of using textual evidence to support the writer's chosen theme.
