The House on Mango Street is written as a series of vignettes. This concept can be covered in a mini-lesson in which students either copy their own notes entirely or students use this guided note sheet to follow along with the lesson.
When I taught this novel, I used the first chapter or vignette of the novel as an example. The students answered questions such as, "What is being described in this vignette?", "What is different about reading about the narrator's house in a vignette than if you were reading a typical chapter of a novel?".
