This resource begins with a clear and engaging 3 page reading on the Hundred Years' War from 1337-1453.
The reading discusses:
- the causes and origins of the War, including Edward III's role
- the early English victories in the Battles of Crecy, Poitiers, and Agincourt
- how the longbow and the cannon made knights and castle warfare obsolete
- Henry V and Charles VII
- Joan of Arc's historical significance and role in inspiring a French resurgence
- The Siege of Orleans, the Battle of Castillon and the end of the War
- The Hundred Years' War role in ending feudalism and increasing nationalism
Students then complete a worksheet involving vocabulary terms and comprehension and opinion questions. A complete teacher answer key is included.
The lesson finishes with a fun activity in which students create an illustrated comic of key events and developments in the Hundred Years' War, cementing student understanding especially among more visual learners. A complete rubric is included.
This lesson covers all the key points students must know about this subject for state assessments, and is completely Common Core aligned.
