The Hunger Games – Common Core Curriculum Standards
Everything needed to have a student-led group project, a Literature Circle, over The Hunger Games is included in this lesson. The unit will require 16 days for students to read the text within their literature circle, with an additional 3 days for reading quizzes.
Instructions for the teacher are included. A daily position sheet is included for assigning each member of the group to complete the written activities they are required to do during the 16 days of assigned readings. These activities include written directions for the different “positions” that each student in the group must complete before the next day’s reading begins. Directions for putting together a separate folder for each reading group and grading of the groups are included.
Monitoring is required for the first few days and random “checking” to be sure that students are on task is advised. This activity requires students to be active readers and participators in a student-led reading project. After discussion of the previous day’s lesson from the position sheets each student has prepared before class, they proceed in their group to read the next assigned section of the text aloud within the group.
The activity also addresses the reading, writing, language, and speaking and listening standards of the Common Core Curriculum. This activity is a good culminating project that demonstrates the students’ ability to decode and respond to a reading text independently. The common core curriculum standards are included with this unit and an explanation of which standards are addressed by the unit.
