Teach your students how to use the text to create understanding of theme in this "during reading" activity.
Students will chart instances of words and events that link to identity as they read Oedipus Rex. They can use any section of the text, large or small. Examples provided.
Students will then use their findings to determine possible themes and messages the text creates about the quest for identity.
Students will apply their learning one step further by learning a quick fact about the Greek understanding of identity, and then they will be asked to reflect on the broader meaning of the story to Greek audiences.
A great during reading strategy. Students are asked to provide text evidence to support their claims. Good Common Core skill. No teacher prep needed!
