This lesson plan was created utilizing the structure of response groups. The purpose of this lesson is to have students respond to and, hopefully gain insight, into opposing views on the immigration issue. The lesson begins with a brief overview of U.S. immigration by way of a short Power Point presentation. Once the overview is complete, students will be divided into groups to examine various primary and secondary source documents, as provided by the teacher, and discuss the pros and cons of each side of the immigration debate based on these sources. Once the students have finished, the classroom will divide into those who have a favorable view of immigration and those who are opposed to immigration with each side supporting its argument based on the information provided during group work. This discussion/debate will center around the questions provided in the second half of the Power Point. The Power Point is posted on this site and is free, as well.
