One of the challenges an English teacher faces when teaching The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks is how to approach all the science presented in the novel. Some chapters are heavy with scientific terms/explanations, and this can quickly turn students away from the story. I developed these content frames to help students decode the science in those six chapters where it is the most complex.
The concept of Content Frames is presented in the project CRISS handbook. It says of content framing, "Armbruster, Anderson, and Meyer (1991) conducted a series of investigations with middle school children that demonstrated the positive efffects of framing on comprehension and retention of science and social studies materials." This worked really well with my high school sophomores.Together, we were able to tackle the science and learn a lot about how to approach and decipher complex texts.
I have included in this download 6 content frames AND my answer keys to them. If you have any questions, feel free to e-mail me at firstname.lastname@example.org
