Have your students ever asked "Why do we have to learn algebra?" Well, this reflection activity has the kids brainstorm their own answers to commonly asked questions, and then the students read answers (provided by www.askdrmath.com) and reflect on what they read. They reflect independently and in pairs and then share their discoveries with the whole class. This activity (in addition to my other project titled "Math in the Real World") really helps my students understand that math is quite important in any job one chooses to do. They discover that they'll even use math OUTSIDE of the working world too. Some excellent class conversations can be had after activities such as this one.
