This novel study is sequenced by chapters. Each chapter has between 5 and 12 questions. ALL questions are higher order thinking questions based loosely on Bloom's Taxonomy and the Williams Model. There are no "time filler" questions!
I created this novel study for use with my Grade 1/2 gifted and talented class and it worked very well. It would also be suitable for mainstream or gifted classes from Grades 3-6.
Some of the concepts and strategies involved in the questions include:
- Cause and effect
- Understanding figurative langauge
- Word meaning in Context
- Building vocabulary
- Connecting to the text
- Understanding creative processes and author purpose
I do not include spaces for answers, as this allows you to differentiate... you might expect a 1 sentence answer from your lowest group of students, and a whole essay on the same question from your top group of students, including evidence/quotes from the text. It gives you the flexibility to use the questions how you choose. In fact, it also allows you to designate (or let the students choose) which questions are answered by which students.
I would read approx. 2 chapters per week. Students would answer the questions (either in small groups or independently) and then we would go through the answers as a class, discussing what makes the "best answer". Students marked their own work, so that they could learn from their mistakes, and reflect on their learning and what makes the best answer.
NOTE: I have a wide range of HIGHER ORDER THINKING novel studies for sale- check out all my titles at my store! They are my best-sellers, as I believe they genuinely fill a need in the market- I actually began making them because I couldn't find anything like them already on the market. I got sick of having to use literature studies that involved really basic types of questioning, and just didn't challenge or extend students' thinking and understanding at all. These novel studies take me a lot of time and careful thought to create- you are truly getting a lot of value for money! I hope you find them as helpful and enjoyable to use as my previous customers have!
