Reading and writing are inseparable. The best writers are skilled readers. The Integrated Reading & Writing Studio is a 57-page manual that guides teachers as they immerse their students in the world of written language, as readers, writers, and apprentices.
The program is divided into four parts: an introductory component featuring a master teaching text followed by a reading workshop; a writing workshop; and the Wednesday Workshop. Each component of the studio complements the others ultimately providing a rich opportunity for students to read as a group and independently, discuss readings together, share books that they have enjoyed, share their writing with each other, experience reading and writing in multiple genres, improve editing techniques, and enhance writing skills.
The manual includes a teacher's guide for a book talk on "Because of Winn-Dixie" by Kate DiCamillo. The guide includes discussion points, suggested writing activities, and assessment ideas. Presented as a master text to be used for whole group instruction, "Because of Winn-Dixie" works well for small group settings too. Visit our blog to read about why we chose "Because of Winn-Dixie" as a master teaching text (http://24-caratclassroom.com/because-of-winn-dixie).
The Integrated Reading & Writing Studio supports Common Core Standards and authentic learning. It is the perfect platform for incorporating science and social studies into the school day. It is an ideal setting for project-based learning.
A rich resource section is included to help you get started and we are available by email to answer any questions.
