Today we think of games as a benefit of leisure and human advancement, but people have been playing games since at least the ancient Greeks in c. 1000 BC (according to Homer’s Iliad and Odyssey). Ancient artwork illustrates people playing games. Authors have written about games and remnants of those activities have been found in many nations. Herodotus, a Greek who lived around 500 BC, describes the reason for the invention of dice and jacks in his great work Histories. While other authors have given different reasons, Herodotus illustrates that games overall are an important part of mankind’s history.
