This tutorial highlights ten syntax rules that are critical for writing JavaScript.


This can be used as a face-to-face lab or as a learning activity done online.

On completion of these learning activities the student should be able to:
- Describe the difference between human thought patterns and programming.
- Explain why HTML code needs to be validated for JavaScript code to run.
- Demonstrate how to check for syntax errors using tool built- into the browser.
- List the five naming conventions.
- Describe why the naming conventions are so important.
- Determine where HTML code can be used vs. where JavaScript code can be used.
- Demonstrate how to "hide" HTML commands inside a line of JavaScript.
- Describe why there can't be any HTML code inside an external JavaScript file.
- Demonstrate the difference between a String and a variable.
- Determine syntax errors based on JavaScript punctuation coming in pairs { } ( ) " "
- Describe why white space is important to a programmer.
- Describe when white space is important to JavaScript (and when it doesn't matter).
