Product Description

This assignment would work well either as a major project or as a final assessment for Jazz Band and some Vocal Jazz programs (noting that some of the jazz styles, such as Bebop, won't be as prominent in the Vocal Jazz repertoire).

In order to complete their work, the students will need this 13 page booklet (1 Title Page, 1 Introduction page, 10 Research Pages, 1 optional page), headphones, and access to YouTube.

Students independently research the styles of ten different jazz eras, noting important people, characteristics of the genre, and selecting one representative recording or performance (found on YouTube).

The final page is optional - you as a teacher can decide whether you would like each student to also share one of their video findings with the class.

My Grade 9-12s did a great job of this as a final assessment, after we had spent the year playing many different styles of jazz and discussing famous performers from the different eras. Most students completed the assignment in five 60 minute classes (the optional presentation/video sharing not included in this estimation).

This assignment is out of 100 marks. No answer key is included, due to the variety of responses and video choices that students may have for each jazz style.
