PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

Hook your students from the start with this engaging pre-reading activity that introduces some of the key themes of Upton Sinclair’s The Jungle, while having students taking a stand (literally!) and presenting arguments on the fly.

Great for a pre-unit activity and/or post-unit reflection, this resource includes:

Detailed Lesson Plan—with step-by-step instructions
Anticipation Guide/Quick Write—in which students take a stand on a list of thought-provoking statements related to themes from The Jungle and do a quick-write on each
Five Corners Activity Posters—so that students can “vote with their feet” by walking to designated areas to demonstrate their level of agreement with each statement
Written Reflection Worksheets—so that students can reflect upon their learning.
Learning Scale and Self-Assessment—so that students clearly understand the learning goal and can monitor their progress

After the activity, students do a written reflection on one of the topics discussed, then assess their own learning based on the provided CCSS-aligned learning scale. Later, when students are finished reading the book or excerpt, they will reflect once again to see whether or not their opinions have changed.

Whether you are reading the full novel or excerpts from it, this activity will engage your students from the start. In fact, this is an activity I have done many times with my own students, and they always beg to do it again!
