*~The Kissing Hand Thematic Unit~*
This packet includes numerous activities based on the the bestseller by Audrey Penn, The Kissing Hand. This unit is perfect to accompany any teacher using this story as an introductory unit to the school year. This packet includes tons of great activities including introductory activities, center games, craft activities and more.
A detailed description of activities can be seen below:
1.) Feelings Graph and Self Illustration- Students have the opportunity to take part in a survey in which they display their feelings pertaining to the first day of school. Students take turns adding their piece to the class graph (happy, scared, or sad)
2.) Self Illustration- Students have the chance to illustrate how they are feeling on a cute handout entitled, "This is how I feel..."
3.) Letter Matching Game- This can be played whole group or used in a center. Students match the mother raccoon (uppercase letter) to the baby raccoon (lowercase letter)
4.) Phonemic Awareness with Chester Raccoon- Students use letter mats to sort hearts with certain pictures. Students sort the sounds for A, B, and C using the raccoon mats (a large, adorable printout of Chester).
5.) Fill Chester's Bucket Counting Game- This can also be played whole group or in a center. Students practice oral counting to 20 by placing heart cutouts in Chester's bucket (a handout illustrating Chester holding a bucket with a specified number).
6.) Graphing with Chester- Students take turns spinning a spinner illsutrating elements found in The Kissing Hand (Chester, Mr. Owl, backpack, stars, moon, schoolhouse, and pawprint). After spinning the spinner, students graph what they got. First to the top wins!
7) Craft Time Fun- This packet includes numerous craft activities to create with your class. Crafts include an adorable necklace that can be given to students to commemorate their first day of school. Also, a raccoon cutout to be placed at the top of a paper bag to create a one of a kind Chester puppet. Lastly, a template is provided and photos to assist you in helping your student create an adorable first day of school craft. Students create a raccoon face using cut out hearts.
8.) Adorable poem to accompany raccoon craft. A sweet poem to be placed below the raccoon craft will surely make students proud and provide an adorable keepsake to treasure for years to come.
9.) This packet also includes 6 unit word cards to place in your unit pocket chart or use to introduce and talk about the story.
