This lesson is a supplemental to The Kite Runner. When students reach the scene with the rape of Hassan, most are shocked by it. Similarly, later in the story when it is clear that Hassan’s son, Sohrab, has been sold to the Taliban for sexual exploitation, readers are again jarred.
This lesson explores the ancient tradition of Bacha Bazi, “playing with boys.” It is a cultural tradition in Afghanistan and some neighboring countries. The lesson makes use of Afghan hip hop music video with English subtitles, as well as an article about the tradition.
Lesson plan includes sources, discussion questions/written response questions, and suggestions for further study.
