This thirty-eight page Word document is a synopsis of the plot of The Kite Runner in "fill in the gaps" format. It is divided into individual chapter units.
Students can demonstrate their understanding of the plot by completing the cloze (filling in the gaps). In this way, they are creating their own summary of the novel. This active learning methodology works better than when I just provide them with notes. Also, I'm ensuring that they understand the plot, and are getting a good sense of setting, character and theme. It's an activity that students really enjoy - and it's not as difficult as writing their own summaries / making notes.
This method works well with students of all abilities, but especially those who might find some elements of this novel difficult to understand.
A word bank is provided at the end of each chapter to assist students. You could redact this to make it more challenging.
This resource could also be used as a revision activity. If revising, I give all students the complete cloze test. I find this is a great way to kick start students' memory of the plot.
Download the preview file to get the cloze test for the first three chapters. Even if you don't purchase my product, this will give you a useful resource with which to start your study of this excellent novel.
