This is a Reader's Theater pack. There are 3 scripts that tell the tale of The Knights of the Fish. This story is a Spanish fairy tale. It is sold as a pack because you need all three scripts to tell the story. A group of students can perform one each week OR three groups can perform different scripts in order.
Part One is for 4 students. It is about the cobbler and his wife. They are starving and he borrows a fishing pole. The cobbler catches a fish that tells him to cook it and eat it. The fish tells the cobbler to make sure his wife eats two large pieces and then to put two other pieces in the ground. When the cobbler does this his luck changes. He is able to make money for his family now. Soon his wife has twins and two plants begin to grow as the boys do.
Part Two is for 4 students. The twin boys are now grown and head out into the world to seek their fortune. One brother goes to a city where everyone is sad. It turns out the princess is being sacrificed to a dragon. The first brother runs to save her. When he does, the king gives permission for the first brother to marry the princess.
Part Three is for 3 - 6 students. I recommend 3. The first brother is now married and his wife tells him of an enchanted castle where no one ever comes back. He goes to investigate and is killed by the evil old witch who lives there. Soon the second brother makes his way to the same city and everyone thinks it is the first brother who they love. The second brother decides not to tell them and goes in search of his twin. When he gets to the enchanted castle, the evil old witch thinks it is the first brother's ghost. She turns to run away and runs right into the second brother's sword. She doesn't want to die so she agrees to confess everything if he will make a potion to heal her. When she is healed she becomes even uglier. The second brother thinks it is because she is ugly inside as well as out. The evil old witch keeps her promise and the second brother finds all of the bodies of the people she killed. He puts them in the tub and they come back to life. The evil old witch gets so angry when none of them become ugly that she dies. The brothers settle down to live near each other and live happily the rest of their days.
There is a short writing assignment after each script asking students to form an opinion about what it is going on or find the moral.
I use reader's theaters to encourage my students to practice fluency. It is a fun way to do something that they need. My scripts are in black and white with only the occasional color picture on front so they photo copy easily. The problem with many other reader's theaters is that students spend a lot of time waiting for their part. When you have a small group they get more practice in and less off task behaviors take place.
My name is Melanie Whitesides but my store name is Wonbyone and, if your students enjoy this script, look for more fairy tales and twisted tales at my site. There is a special category for Spanish fairy tales! I hope that your students enjoy this script as much as mine did. Let me know how things go!
