Students will begin this assignment by watching the opening segment of the Crash Course U.S. history video:The Cold War in Asia. The video will introduce the time period and go over the key themes and events of the time. The video will introduce the Korean Peninsula and how it was divided following the end of World War 2. The invasion of South Korea by the North, the American and UN response, and the ensuing "police action" are all covered. The allied advance against North Korea, all the way to the Chinese border is discussed, as is the Chinese entry into the war, and the stabilization of the front line around the 38th parallel. President Harry Truman, General Douglas MacArthur, and Kim Il Sung's roles in the war are also examined. The eventual conclusion of the war, and the casualties and destruction it caused, are the final topics covered. After watching the opening segment of the video, student will proceed to the history.com website and read an article on the Korean War. The American belief in containing communism, the role of Mao Zedong and Communist China, and the armistice signed at Panmunjom are all covered in more detail in this reading.
