This product, The Kwanzaa Kids and Craftivity, is a perfect supplement to my Kwanzaa Unit for Young Learners! But it can also be used independent of the unit, which is why I pulled it from the unit.
Included is a 11 page informational reader that is interactive. Students follow along with the Kwanzaa Kids as the narrators as they go day-by-day during a week long Kwanzaa celebration. Students are introduced to the principle and symbol for each day, along with a thought provoking question about how that day's message applies to themselves as students. The book is most suitable for fluent readers, but could be read to younger students with an adults guidance.
The book also has a craftivity that makes a kinara candle holder. Each day after students have read a page, I suggest they color a candle in the back of their book. On the last day of reading, they can cut out the already colored candles and make their craft. It's a fairly simple craft with minimal cutting and gluing. But it's very purposeful and meaningful to Kwanzaa celebrations.
This book had adorable graphics the students will be engaged with and it's thought provoking as well. Your students will learn and have fun with the Kwanzaa Kids as well!
