My students always love reading this chilling tale by Roald Dahl, however I felt like I wasn't doing my job by giving basic reading comprehension questions.
To up the rigor, I decided to pick one key literary element to have my students focus on while reading: Point of View. I decided that the point of view and perspective the Dahl chose are vital to creating the suspenseful story.
This handout goes beyond simple reading comprehension questions to truly raise the rigor to Common Core standards by leading the students on their own analysis of the importance of Dahl's point of view choice.
Included are three sections:
Pre-Reading - This section include a KUD chart, that lists terms the students should Know before reading, the standard they should Understand after the lesson, and what they will Do to show their understanding.
During-Reading - While reading, pause every so often and have the students write a quick objective summary of what is going on, as well as what the character Bill is thinking/their own thoughts
After-Reading: I included 5 leveled questions that will guide the students to their own analysis of the importance of the point of view.
The handout is in Microsoft format for easy editing!
