within the context of Andrew Clements' The Last Holiday Concert
. In this holiday-themed story by the author of Frindle, popular sixth-grader Hart Evans is left in charge of organizing the school chorus' holiday production when the teacher gets fed up.

Students work in pairs or small groups on numbered activity mats to make sense of the relationship between two independent clauses and choose an appropiate coordinating conjunction. Each activity mat has six items, and students choose the coordinating conjunction that appropriately expresses the relationship between the two independent clauses.
