Already dreading syllabus day? Guess what? Your students are too. How many classes do they have? How many new teachers will they meet? How many student interactions are they forced into mere minutes after trudging back into the building?
But...but...don't we *have* to go over classroom rules on the first day?
Give them something memorable, controversial, funny, strange, and outside of the box. I put my students in groups of four, and after saying as little as possible, I hand out this document: The Laws.
There are 24 (you can add or subtract) laws that could be very applicable to your classroom, or they could have nothing to do with it at all. That is up to your students, and what you discuss with them after their small group discussions. This will be something they talk about and remember you by. This will set the tone for the year.
Are you an "in the box" kind of teacher? This probably isn't for you. The Laws cover topics like:
-urinating in the classroom
-destruction of property (and camels)
-and much, much more.
This is a two page, Word Document. Have fun with it, I know I have.
