This is a literature unit to use with The Leanin' Dog by K.A. Nuzum. If this book is unfamiliar to you, you should read it! It is a great dog story written in rich, complex text with deep meaningful themes. It is a great book for students to practice close reading in literature. The best part is... it is not your typical sad ending dog story. Your students will love it. The unit includes:
- 8 student worksheets to correlate with groups of chapters.
-1 poetry activity (this can be entered in a contest on the author's website!)
-1 visualization activity
The worksheets mainly consist of text based multiple choice questions, but also include short answer, discussion and extended response questions. Skills covered in the questions include:
• figurative language (simile, analogy, metaphor, personification, idiom, irony)
• vocabulary and context clues
• citing textual evidence
K.A. Nuzum features a poetry contest each month on her website,
http://kanuzum.com. This is a perfect opportunity to get your students published.
The student worksheets can be used as quizzes after the sets of chapters, or as a reading guide for students to complete as they read.
The number of pages include answer keys
