The Legend of Hobbomock, the Sleeping Giant, is a book that's near and dear to my heart. I grew up two miles from the "sleeping giant", a mountain in Hamden, Connecticut, and first heard the legend when I was very young.

The legend was passed by the Quinnipiac Native Americans from one generation to the next by word of mouth. They hunted in the forests of the mountain and fished in nearby streams.Their lives depended on the mountain's resources. One only needs to read the book to understand the effect the sleeping giant had on the Quinnipiac.

This book was written by Jason Marchi, a Connecticut award winning author, poet and journalist. It was illustrated by Jesse Bonelli, a gifted artist, who with Jason, studied the topography and basalt rock of the mountain before he created the stone creature and all of the illustrations for the book.

Together they captured the true essence of this Native American legend. The book won a Connecticut Press Club Award in 2012, in the Children's Fiction Book Category and was a best seller at the Barnes and Noble store in North Haven, CT, in 2011. The North Haven Barnes Noble store manager and community resources manager have both stated that the book was the single best selling hardcover book the store has ever stocked and sold.

I was very honored when Jason asked me to design educational, fun activities for the legend! They'll align with ELA Common Core Standards and state standards. The 3 - 5 social studies Common Core Standards haven't been released yet. When they are, I'm sure they'll align very well with the activities I'm creating.

Though the book is listed for ages 6-10, it's a marvelous resource for anyone teaching or learning about Native American legends. An audio recording of the book will also be available soon. It is being professionally recorded by an NPR host who plays and reviews classical music on the radio.

I'll be posting free activities for this marvelous book. Follow me to learn when I post them.
