This activity works with “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” by Washington Irving and the study of mood. Students will consider the use of music to create or enhance mood in the story. They will examine different parts of the short story and think of songs they know that would enhance the mood of the scene. They will justify their choices.
Music is one way to help students understand mood easier. In movies, mood is often set by music (and lightning.) From the creepy music before the boogey man jumps out to the love music before the Big Kiss to the upbeat music, such as training montage music (Think “Eye of the Tiger.”)
Students will examine selected scenes and pick a song to fit the established mood of the scene. They will include selected lyrics and then explain how the song, and those lyrics, create the desired mood.
NOTE: This activity does not include information on the study of mood. Teacher must provide explanation of mood and how to identify.
