This viewing guide for the Legend of Tarzan (2016) focuses on the theme of imperialism. Students first discuss the Belgian Congo and then evaluate how realistically and accurately The Legend of Tarzan presents those events. Ultimately, students write a film critique based on how much they liked the film and how realistic it seemed. My teenage students (10th grade) loved the movie and it was a fun example of imperialism and how Hollywood presents history.
The Legend of Tarzan is rated PG-13. for sequences of action and violence, some sensuality and brief rude dialogue (swearing). There are several fighting scenes throughout the film, including characters dying.
