Apply this novel study immediately to your guided reading rotations, independent reading, or small group instruction. Students read chunks of the text, usually 3 chapters at a time, and answer text-based questions. There are also vocabulary words selected from the text for students to hone in on while they are reading. After completing the novel, students have two extended response questions to work on, focusing on theme and character development, modeled after state test questions.
Students are encouraged to use the RAPPS strategy of answering short response questions:
Restate the question
Answer the question
At the bottom of each page, there are evidence sentence starters (ie: According to the text) to help students amp up their written responses to sound more sophisticated.
