If you have never used mentor sentences, here is a quick introduction to mentor sentences in this unit.

These mentor sentences focus on sentences from the novel. Each language task should take around 10-15 minutes.

Language Tasks to complete with each mentor sentence:

Day 1 - What does this sentence mean? Students determine the sentence's meaning based on context of the novel.

Day 2 - What do I notice about this sentence? Students examine the structure of the mentor sentence and identify parts of speech.

Day 3 - What do I know this sentence means? Students demonstrate their understanding of the sentence’s meaning.

Day 4 - What is the structure of this sentence? As a class, examine the style and structure of the sentence and create a sentence frame based on the mentor sentence.

Day 5 - Can I write a quality sentence? Students imitate the structure of the mentor sentence by writing an original sentence in the same style and structure as the mentor sentence.
