This reading comprehension test for The Lightning Thief was written for use in regular, inclusion, and special education sixth grade classrooms. It is part of my full unit for this book. In addition to the test, this 15 page free sample test for the first three chapters of the book includes a character study guides for students, a modified section, and an answer key. This test has 32 questions.
The word modified only appears on the teacher’s answer keys. Therefore, you will have to sort these pages out when printing your test.
The test is made up of multiple choice questions; sequencing questions; true/false questions; character identification — matching. Some of the other tests in the complete unit for this book have a section for identifying quotes/fill in the blank. The test is easy to correct and provides an accurate tool to check student’s understanding of the material.
In keeping with the Common Core Standards, page numbers from the book are provided for each question and students are encouraged to use the text to find their answers. The questions are designed to test: recognizing cause and effect; recalling facts and details; comparing and contrasting; understanding sequence; making predictions; finding word meaning in context; identifying author’s purpose; drawing conclusions and making inferences; interpreting figurative language; and understanding metaphors and similes.
Experience proved that the more competent students successfully answer many of the questions using recall, while less competent students relied heavily on using the provided page numbers and the text, making these test a useful tool to help the overall student population become more confident readers.
