What is The Literature Patch and how does it work?
This file contains 50 short "patches" from different middle grade, young adult, and picture books. The purpose of looking at a patch of literature is to deconstruct and analyze the text for writing craft. Students learn to pay attention and notice sentence construction, word choice, figurative language, sentence variety, sentence beginnings, punctuation, dialogue and more. Students use the patches as a model for their own writing. They "try out" what they notice about the author's techniques in their pieces.
There are several options for using The Literature Patch:
1 Each week the class completes one analysis together and applies a technique to student's own pieces.
2 Students complete an analysis on their own and then come together in small groups to discuss the analysis and "try out" the techniques.
3 The teacher places a copy of the text on a projection devise and models deconstructing and analyzing the text focusing on a specific technique, and then asks students to "try out" the technique in their own writing.
4 The Literature Patch can also be used as writing prompts for journals.
