This is a 16 page writing journal to go along with the book The Little Engine That Could.
Use with Kindergarten Reading Street Unit 5 Week 4.
There’s a writing activity for every day of the week. Here is what's included:
Monday: Sequence Writing
Tuesday: Sentence Starters
Wednesday: Writing Prompt
Thursday: Informative Writing
Friday: Free Write
Sentence starters and shadow writing include the sight words for the week and some review!
Each day also has a writing checklist and alphabet chart on an additional page. The checklist reminds the students to:
-Use their quiet voice while working
-Use uppercase letters
-Use finger spaces
-Write the sounds they hear
-Write with pencil first, then color second
-Write the date
Every writing section begins with a mountain to remind the students to begin their sentence with an uppercase letter. At the end of each sentence is an empty box reminding them to use end punctuation.
*I began using word dictation to help my students sound out and spell familiar words. If you do Orton-Gillingham, your students will be familiar with pounding the sounds in the words and will do well with this. I have my students say all the sounds of the word while "pounding" the sounds in the air before they can write anything.
There are four pages for word dictation--Monday-Thursday. The words used for dictation were taken directly from the reading street teacher edition lessons for that exact day! :) The final page of this document explains the word dictation and lists the words for the teacher's use.
Copying directions: Copy front to back, top to bottom. Staple along the top. When the journal is open to a page and laid out flat, the writing checklist and alphabet chart will be on top and the writing for the day on the bottom...both pages in view together!
