These retell and sequencing activities were created as a companion to the book The Old Lady Who Was Not Afraid of Anything by Linda D. Williams.

There are two versions of the printable activity. One includes traceable phrases from the story in order. The other is blank. Students can cut and paste the phrases or write them in the boxes on their own. For both activities, students cut, sequence, and paste the picture cards in the numbered boxes to retell the events in the story.

Also included are 6 phrase cards and 6 picture cards to use as a read aloud companion. These can be used in a variety of different ways! Make multiple copies to involve the entire class in these activities:

Use as a matching activity by matching the picture with the correct phrase from the book.

Get the class up and moving to practice sequencing! Place your students into groups of six, give each student a picture card to hold and have them work together to sequence the pictures. Extend the activity by having each student retell his or her part of the story.

Laminate, glue onto craft sticks, and pass out to students to hold while you read the story aloud. Students listen to the read aloud and when they hear their phrase, they can hold it up, repeat the phrase, come up with a movement to do along with that phrase, etc.
