This book is a Guided Reading Level “M” and DRA level 24 text. The activities in this packet are ideal for students in kindergarten through 3rd grade.

This 39 Page Product contains the following Speech and Language Activities:


Story Visuals for Sequencing and Story Retell (color and B/W)

12 Tier 2 Story Vocabulary (cottage, collect, herbs, spices, sliver, unhappy, path, stumbled, pace, startled, brave, crow)

Concept Map-Students can complete the graphic organizer to define and describe a Jack-o-lantern “CAN...IS…HAS…IS NOT…” (A sample completed concept map is included).

Venn Diagram-Students can complete the Venn Diagram graphic organizer to compare and contrast story characters (Little Old Lady and Scarecrow), and objects from the story. An Open-Ended Venn Diagram is included to expand on the skill with other items from the story.

Story Map-Students can complete the story map by identifying the characters, setting, problem and solution for story comprehension and retell.

Character Trait Flow Map- Students identify character traits for the Little Old Lady and provide text evidence. (A Sample completed flow map is included).

Frayer Model- An open-ended vocabulary graphic organizer to define and describe any target vocabulary word from the story. A sample Frayer Model is included.

28 Comprehension Questions- “Wh-” questions, inference questions, phonemic awareness questions and critical thinking questions.

6 Articulation Word Lists for target sounds /k, g, l, s, r/, “sh” and “th” with target words from the story on each list.

Grammar Visual Aid for target verbs. This story is written in past tense. A visual graphic is included in color and black and white to support students’ development of verb tense throughout the story. A Sample graphic organizer is included.

Word Sort Activity- Students collect nouns from the story and sort them into the correct category (people, places, things, animals).

Open-Ended Fall Gameboard- This fall gameboard can be used with any of the activities included in this packet (rhyming word pairs, vocabulary word cards, comprehension cards, grammar activities, articulation word lists).
